Root Canals

Infection deep inside a tooth can be a painful experience. Injuries, decay and other factors could result in an abscess or infected tooth. Unfortunately, a tooth infection can jeopardize the tooth and can pose the risk of the infection spreading to other areas. It is vital to stop the infection before it causes complications. The best solution for infected teeth is root canal therapy. At Roswell Complete Dentistry, we provide root canals for infected teeth at our dental center in Roswell, GA.

Causes and Symptoms of Tooth Infections

Tooth infections occur when bacteria are able to get inside the tooth. This can happen as tooth decay creates cavities that reach the interior of the tooth. It can also occur when there is a broken or cracked tooth that is left unrepaired. The inflammation of the bacteria multiplying inside the tooth can press on the nerve roots and cause intense pain. There may be swelling or redness near the tooth and the tooth may be very sensitive.

Root Canals Offer Pain Relief for Infected Teeth

Root canal therapy can remove the infected tissue from inside the tooth and relieve the pain. During a root canal, the tooth is opened to allow access to the root canals inside. The pulp and nerves inside the tooth are removed. Antibiotic medications are used to sterilize and kill bacteria inside the tooth before it is repacked and sealed.

After a root canal, the tooth no longer has live nerves. This means it will not be in pain or need to be numbed. Since the interior of the tooth has been removed, most teeth with root canals need a dental crown to protect the tooth from damage. The crown can be added after the root canal is completed.

Root canals can save an infected tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. If you have severe tooth pain, it is important to have it evaluated to determine if you have a tooth infection. To schedule a tooth pain appointment, contact us at Roswell Complete Dentistry. We offer emergency dental care for severe tooth pain and root canal therapy at our dental center in the Roswell and Alpharetta, GA, area.
