Crowns and bridges usually take a couple of appointments to complete. The teeth are prepared during your first appointment while temporary crowns or bridges are placed to provide protection to your teeth. This happens when a custom restoration is being made.
It is normal for you to feel numbness on your lips, teeth, and tongue for several hours when anesthetic has been applied. It is suggested to not chew until the numbness is completely gone.
There are times temporary crowns come off. Please do call us when this happens, and keep the temporary so we can re-cement it. Bear in mind that the proper fit of your final restoration requires your temporaries stay in place.
After each appointment, you may feel some hot, cold, and pressure sensitivity and these are all normal. You will also experience gum soreness for a few days. Just rinse three times a day with warm salt water (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, rinse-swish-spit) to reduce pain and swelling. You can also use medication as directed.
Avoid eating sticky foods (especially gum) and hard foods to help keep your temporary in place. Chew only on the opposite side of your mouth when possible. Brush your teeth the normal way but floss very carefully and remove the floss from the side to prevent the temporary from coming off.
Please call our office if you experience bites that are uneven and persistent pain.
