If you have missing teeth, Elegant Smiles dental implants are one of the best ways to restore your smile. But not everyone is a dental implant candidate. Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re in the early discovery stages of restoring your bite’s integrity:
You Have Missing or Non-Restorable Teeth
We don’t want to have to extract healthy or restorable teeth. Any time a natural tooth can be preserved, we’ll want to make that our priority. Exceptions might include if you need a full arch treatment such as “All-on-4” types of implants.
You’ve Addressed Underlying Gum Disease
Active gum disease (periodontitis) is the leading cause of dental implant failure. Your gum tissues and the underlying bone structures need to be healthy and sound enough to place an implant in that space. If you don’t have enough bone in that immediate area, a graft may be helpful.
You’ve Discussed Underlying Medical Concerns
Specific types of prescription medications, recent surgeries, or chronic health conditions can impact your body’s response to dental implant therapy or other dental procedures. We’ll review your health history at the time of your consultation just to make sure you’re in the clear. Be sure to bring a list of any prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, or supplements that you’re taking.
You’re Old Enough for Implant Treatment
We don’t want to install dental implants if your mouth is still developing. For most people, that’s around 18 years of age (give or take). If you have a teenager with a missing tooth, we can discuss temporary options before they qualify for traditional implant therapy.
