Reversing Cavities

Is it really possible to reverse cavities?

It may sound like a myth, but reversing cavities really is possible! At Roswell Complete Dentistry, we pride ourselves on practicing minimally invasive dentistry. This means that our goal is to be as conservative as possible when it comes to dental work, and to only perform work that is absolutely necessary.  We carry products that contain xylitol and fluoride, which both work to reverse cavities and strengthen teeth. These products come in various forms of rinses, gums, candies, and toothpastes. Your dentist will assess your cavity risk, and make recommendations for how to prevent and reverse cavities.

How do these products work?

Tooth decay occurs when acid breaks down the outer part of the tooth, called enamel, and eventually reaches the deeper part of the tooth, called dentin. This acid comes from acidic foods and beverages, as well as acidic by-products from certain bacteria in your mouth when they consume the sugar in your food and beverages. Fluoride, which is in many toothpastes and in tap water, and xylitol, which is a natural sugar substitute, are both toxic to the acid-producing bacteria. They help kill the bad bacteria in our mouths and promote growth of the beneficial bacteria. They also help remineralize, or harden, the areas of the teeth where decay has started to break down the tooth. If the decay is shallow enough, we will first try to remineralize, or repair, the tooth with these products. We will then reassess these areas at your regular check-ups.
